Apache Parquet is a binary & system format developed by Twitter and Cloudera, now Apache, first appearing in 2013. It is normally produced by Spark, Pandas, data lake pipelines.
Columnar rather than row-based, with per-column compression and min/max statistics in the footer, so a query can skip entire row groups unread. The marker PAR1 appears at both the start and the very end of the file.

Look at the first bytes rather than the extension. A genuine PARQUET begins with 50 41 52 31 (PAR1). Opening the file in OpenAnyFile shows that signature in the file-details panel, so a file renamed to .parquet by mistake is easy to spot.
