Why verify a checksum?

Download pages publish a hash so you can confirm the file you received is exactly the one they published — not corrupted, not tampered with. Even one changed bit gives a completely different hash.

Which one to use

Use SHA-256 when it is offered. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting corruption but are no longer safe against deliberate tampering.
