Frequently asked questions
Privacy, formats, limits, offline use — the honest answers, all in one place.
Is OpenAnyFile really free?
Yes — completely free with no accounts, trials, watermarks or limits. Open as many files as you want, forever.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
Never. OpenAnyFile is 100% client-side: your browser reads the file locally using the JavaScript File API and renders it on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged anywhere.
Which file formats are supported?
Over 300 extensions across 20 viewer engines: images (JPG, PNG, WEBP, SVG, TIFF, HEIC…), video (MP4, WEBM, MKV…), audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC…), documents (PDF, DOCX, AI/EPS, Markdown), spreadsheets (XLSX, CSV, ODS), design files (PSD), fully browsable archives (ZIP, TAR, GZ, RAR, 7Z — click into folders and open nested files), interactive 3D models (GLB, STL, OBJ, FBX), SQLite databases, Jupyter notebooks, code (40+ languages), fonts (TTF, OTF, WOFF) and presentation text. Every other extension opens in the universal hex inspector.
Can it open files with unknown or rare extensions?
Yes. If no dedicated viewer matches, the universal inspector shows the file's raw bytes in hex + ASCII along with its size, MIME type and date — so no file is ever a dead end.
Does OpenAnyFile work offline?
Yes. It's a Progressive Web App: install it from your browser menu and the interface plus common viewers keep working without an internet connection. Some heavy formats (DOCX, XLSX, PSD) fetch their rendering library on first use, so open one of each while online to cache them.
How do I install it as an app?
On desktop Chrome or Edge, click the install icon in the address bar. On Android, choose “Add to Home screen”. On iPhone or iPad, tap Share → “Add to Home Screen”. It then launches full-screen like a native app.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no hard limit — it depends on your device's memory. Videos and audio stream efficiently at any size; very large spreadsheets or PSDs are limited only by your browser's RAM.
Can I open password-protected or DRM files?
No. Encrypted archives, password-protected PDFs and DRM-locked media can't be decoded without their keys — the viewer will show what it can and fall back to the inspector.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — the entire experience is responsive and touch-friendly on Android and iOS, and installable on both.
