What is a .osm file?
OpenStreetMap XML is a map and GPS format developed by OpenStreetMap Foundation, first released in 2004. It is usually created by JOSM, OpenStreetMap exports.
Raw OSM data: nodes with coordinates, ways that reference them, and tags such as highway=residential.
