Look at the first bytes rather than the extension. A genuine KEY begins with 50 4B 03 04 or 2D 2D 2D 2D 2D. Opening the file in OpenAnyFile shows that signature in the file-details panel, so a file renamed to .key by mistake is easy to spot.
