How to open a .dotx file

You have a DOTX file and nothing on your machine will touch it. Here is what the format actually is, and how to read one in about four seconds without installing anything.

What is a .dotx file?

Word Template is a document format developed by Microsoft, first appearing in 2007. It is normally produced by Microsoft Word 2007+.

Same OOXML package as DOCX, flagged as a template so double-clicking creates a new document instead of editing the original.

Open a .dotx file in your browser

OpenAnyFile routes .dotx to its OOXML document converter, which converts the document body converted to clean formatted HTML — headings, lists, tables and inline images preserved.

  1. Open the OpenAnyFile opener in this browser — nothing to download or sign up for.
  2. Drag your .dotx file onto the drop zone, click to browse for it, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  3. The extension is detected and the file is handed to the OOXML document converter.
  4. Your DOTX opens on its own viewer page: the document body converted to clean formatted HTML — headings, lists, tables and inline images preserved.
  5. Use fullscreen for a closer look, or download the file back out unchanged. Nothing is transmitted anywhere — the parsing happens in your own browser process.

What you can and cannot do with it here

Works

Viewing, inspecting and verifying. You get the document body converted to clean formatted HTML — headings, lists, tables and inline images preserved. File details, exact byte size and the detected signature are always shown.

Does not work

Editing and re-saving. OpenAnyFile is a reader, not an editor — for changes you still need Word or an equivalent.

Is it safe to open a {E} file on a website?

It depends entirely on whether the website uploads it, and almost all of them do. That is a real problem when the documents file in question is a contract, a client deliverable or something under NDA. OpenAnyFile removes the question: the decoding happens inside your browser tab, so there is no transfer, no queue, no temporary storage and no retention window to read about in a privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions about DOTX files

Can I open a .dotx file without installing Word?

Yes. OpenAnyFile's OOXML document converter runs in your browser, so you can read a DOTX file with nothing installed. You get the document body converted to clean formatted HTML — headings, lists, tables and inline images preserved. For full editing you still need the original application — this is a viewer, not an editor.

How can I check a file really is a DOTX file?

Look at the first bytes rather than the extension. A genuine DOTX begins with 50 4B 03 04 (PK..). Opening the file in OpenAnyFile shows that signature in the file-details panel, so a file renamed to .dotx by mistake is easy to spot.

Is it safe to open a DOTX file online?

With OpenAnyFile, yes, because nothing is uploaded. The file is read locally through your browser's File API and never leaves your device, so there is no server copy to leak, log or retain. That matters most for the kind of file people are least willing to hand to a random converter site.

What is a .dotx file, exactly?

Word Template — an application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.template format created by Microsoft since 2007. Same OOXML package as DOCX, flagged as a template so double-clicking creates a new document instead of editing the original.

Does the same viewer handle formats related to DOTX?

Yes — the same engine also opens .docx, .docm, .dotm, so you can compare related files without switching tools.
